Guitar Heads: Should I buy this Fender, Behrringer, or Browsnvile?
From what I've read, the Starcasters are made in Mexico, (not necessarily a bad thing, but most people who have purchased them have decided to swap out the pickups) although there may be another job lot that is made somewhere else. I couldn't get to the Sam Ash site. The review on the Behringer does not sound promising however.
I looked up the Brownsville independently, and it doesn't look half bad for an entry level guitar. You might want to take a look a the Epiphoes however. I love the little Sg double cutaways and they pretty much meet your requirements. The Les Paul Jr. has a pretty good rep as well. You might have to shell out ten extra bucks for shipping (or wait for the back to school specials) but that's pretty close to your criteria. I think the Les Paul Jr. is actually cheaper than you expected. Hope this helps.
Reply:I vote Fender.
I have an american made Strat that plays like a dream.
Reply:Ibanez is a better guitar for the price than the squire you are looking at. squires can be great guitars, but the quality varies a lot between them. if you want a squire, then play as many as you can before buying and pick the best one. i wouldnt buy either of the other brands over the internet, as they arent sold in music stores most of the time (music stored have to be a bit more picky about their stock, if it doesnt play well in the store, it doesnt sell) Also, the fender doesnt look like a real fender, it looks like a fake. DONT BUY YOUR FIRST GUITAR OVER THE INTERNET, go to a store so someone will be there to help you tune it, set it up, and connect you with other musicians. I cant tell you how many people I know who have given up music because they bought unplayable instruments.
you may want to consider an acoustic or acoustic electric for our first guitar. with an electric, you have to buy an amp to hear it, you have to have a place to plug in and a cord attached to your guitar. with an acoustic you just pull it out and play. also inexpensive acoustics tend to be better quality than inexpensive electrics.
also you should try and save up at least 230 dollars for your first instrument, for that price you will get a surprisingly good acoustic, an ok acoustic electric, or an ok electric guitar (without an amp) with an amp 300 is the minimum for a combo that will take you from beginner to advanced.
if you must buy from the internet, check elderlys or folkofthewood, they may not have the best prices on the net, but the quality of their product is much better.
Reply:For $150 to spend, I'd rather buy a good used guitar than a cheap new one. If you have a Guitar Center in your area, they take used equipment and you might find something there you like.
